TME Favorite Albums of 2013: #10-1

Next Page:  List of #11-15

10.  Portugal The Man – Evil Friends

Not a huge fan of the last few albums.  PTM put out albums so often there is going to be a few that you really connect with and a few that you don’t.  This is a little more accessible to the average fan.  Less art rocky and more poppy.

9.  Jolly – The Audio Guide to Happiness (Part 2)

Part 1 was a great album.  Part 2 is a great follow up.  It is a little more generic rock than part one was.

8.  Minus the Bear – Acoustics II

Everything they do makes me even more of a fan.  I generally don’t like these types of albums, but when they are done like this it is hard to ignore.

7.  Local Natives – Hummingbird

“Gorilla Manor” was great but at times it dragged on.  “Hummingbird” doesn’t lag at times and is a more complete album.

6.  Fitz and the Tantrums – More Than Just A Dream

Every song on this album is catchy as hell.  They could release every track as a single.  More than likely you have heard a few of the songs on commercials or TV shows.

5.  Moving Mountains – Moving Mountains

This band continues to mature.  They also continue to try out new genres.  “Pneuma” is an all time favorite.  After “Pneuma” it was going to be hard to create an album even close to as good.  They hit the alternative rock genre with full force and hit a home run.

4.  Volcano Choir – Repave

Justin Vernon is a little less raspy and a little more upbeat on “Repave.”  I enjoy everything from Bon Iver.  This is different and still on the same level.

3.  Foals – Holy Fire

Foals really get the feet tapping with “Holy Fire.”  It is upbeat, funky and groovey.  The first few songs are incredible.  If you like “Total Life Forever” you will like this.

2.  Empire of the Sun – Ice on the Dune

I still have no idea what they are saying half the time nor do I understand what they are singing about, but damn this album was on repeat for weeks.  I almost danced out of my car one day.  I guess you can call it trance pop.  It is infectious.  I have heard they are a must see live band.

1.  Phosphorescent – Muchacho

Matthew Houck, the man behind Phosphorescent, went through a tough stretch after his last tour.  You can feel the pain and desperation in the music.  The true emotion conveyed through the album is a journey everyone should take.  This is what music sounds like when an artist cares about the end product and is not influenced by outside factors.
